Durham Area

Durham County Record Office
Based in County Hall in Durham city. It collects and preserves the records from the present County Durham and the historic county of Durham (before 1974) between the Rivers Tyne and Tees. There are detailed catalogues available to view in the search room or fully searchable via their website.

Durham University Library
The University library contains diocesan, family and antiquarian collections dating from medieval to modern times and covers both County Durham and Northumberland, as well as certain parts of neighbouring counties. The collections include:

Durham County Registrar
Copies of certificates of registration of births, deaths and marriages may be obtained from Durham County Registrar. Some indexes are online e.g.

Durham Family History Resources

Regionally

Northumberland and Durham Family History Society
The Society has a Research Centre at Percy House in Newcastle with a library and search room. It has over 1200 family trees that have been donated by Members and are available in the library at Percy House. Their collection contains a large number of Monumental Inscriptions transcripts.
