The passing of Jean Heatherington

It is with great sadness that the Weardale Museum announces the death of our friend, colleague and Trustee Jean Heatherington.

Jean was involved with the Museum since the very first meeting in 1984 when it was decided to set it up and she played many pivotal roles in its running alongside husband David. She was a keen supporter of its work in promoting the history and heritage of Weardale and was very involved in the setting up and running of many of the exhibitions. She worked very hard in recruiting the volunteers needed to ensure the Museum could open and until very recently, in addition to her other roles, was the Stewards Co-ordinator.

As a Trustee, and a member of the Museum Task Group, Jean’s experience and knowledge was vital in the discussions about purchasing High House Chapel and in the development of the new Museum and Heritage Centre.

On a personal note husband David proposed to her on the day the Museum opened in 1985 and they were married in High House Chapel a few months later. They were ‘wedded’ to the place ever since.

Jean passed away at home following a short illness. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Our thoughts and prayers go out to David and the wider family.

Jean's funeral will take place on Tuesday 6th December at 11.30 am in St Andrew's Church, Westgate; following the service Jean will be interred in the churchyard. Family flowers only - donations may be made in Jean's memory to the Weardale Museum, Weardale Community Hospital and Cross Hill Nursing Home.

You are advised to wrap up well and David has asked that people wear a bright scarf, hat, tie or socks.
