Getting Here

No matter how you choose to get here, a warm welcome is always guaranteed.

By Car

Find us beside the A689 between Stanhope and Alston at the centre of the North Pennines and only an hour by car from Tyneside, Teesside and the Lake District.


By Bus

Service 100 'Roof of England' Bus operates on Sundays.
Weardale Motor Services also run a regular bus service through Weardale, except on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Opening Hours

Opening Dates & Times 2023

1st of April to 28th of May: Wednesday to Sunday
(plus Bank Holiday Mondays 10 Apr and 1 May)

29th of May to 1st of October: Open 7 days a week

4th of October to the 29th of October: Wednesday to Sunday

Opening hours are 1:00pm to 4:30pm.

We will close on 29th of October for winter months but can open, by appointment, for family history research.

Groups visits can still be made outside the advertised opening hours by prior appointment.

Please note the following:
  •  High House Chapel is currently closed for building and restoration work
  •  Our opening times may change depending on the situation and availability of Stewards, please check our Facebook page or this website for details or ring Kate Gill (Curator) at the number below.
  •  Our car park is currently closed for health and safety reasons while restoration work is ongoing in High House Chapel. Visitors may park on the roadway adjacent to the Museum but please leave the entrance way and our neighbour’s gateway clear. Additional parking is on the road side to the west of the Museum. Drivers may drop off passengers before parking.

Admission Fees

Children

Admission for under 18's is free

Adults

Standard admission for adults is £4.50 per person
Adult admission with gift aid £5.00 per person

Join Friends of the Museum - Annual subscription £10 per person and get free entry to the museum for a year.

Parking

Due to essential building works, the museums car park is currently closed. Further information on the closure and alternative parking arrangements can be found here

Disabled Access

Access for wheelchair users available to the ground floor. Our upstairs displays including the Weardale Tapestry can be viewed in our large books and on our specially designed ipad displays. Access Statement

Group Visits

Group visits can be catered for outside of our core operational hours by appointment. One of our volunteers will meet your group personally and provide a guided tour of the museum. More information can be found here.
